'Initial painting - a pencil sketch':

At the beginning an artist draws a pencil sketch. The main composition is drawn and defined, giving a basic impression of the future picture.

'An intermediate layer ':

A first layer of painting is called in Russian 'zamalyevok.'
On a lacquer box, with the mother-of-pearl pieces already fitted in and fixed, a painter draws the main colors and shades. No details yet. When the first layer is dry, it needs to be varnished and then allowed to dry. Any bulges and varnish bubbles left should be removed in order to prepare the surface for the next layer. The surface should be perfectly smooth.

'A final layer':

The following layer of painting is called in Russian 'peremalyevok.'
At this stage a painter does his best to draw thoroughly all the tiniest details, increase shades and make the light brighter. With the help of a thin steel feather a painter draws the ornaments on the sides of the box, inscribes his name and the manufacture date. Then the lacquer box is subsequently varnished with 10 layers at least and later polished.
